Devendorf Park (Carmel-by-the-Sea)

Few small towns are more beautiful than Carmel-by-the-Sea, and this spot of green at the corner of Ocean and Junipero Avenues its one of it most beautiful features.
Shaded by live oaks and evergreen trees, this small yet exquisite park is a lush, quiet respite from the bustling sidewalks and shops of downtown. A stone path cuts through a vibrant green lawn, lined with old-fashioned wooden benches and framed by live oak and evergreen trees. Here and there are bright green bushes, along with calla lilies, agapanthus, fuchsias, and an array of other flowers. A goldfish pond, a flagpole, and assorted tributes to historical figures in stone and sculpture complete the charms of this oasis.

This park is a perfect place to sit and relax, or else to enjoy a picnic on a sunny day, or for children to play catch, tag, jumprope or hula-hoop. Unfortunately no dogs are allowed, but people of all ages are. At the edge of the park on 6th Ave. are public restrooms and the main bus stop of downtown Carmel, so that particular stretch of street is never empty.

For holidays and other special occasions, Devendorf Park is downtown Carmel's social center. Throughout the year it plays host to several art shows. At Easter it plays host to Breakfast with the Bunny, while on the Fourth of July it's filled with burger- and hot dog-munching crowds listening to live rock music at the annual Independence Day celebration. Memorial Day and Veterans Day have their annual celebrations here too. And every December, this park becomes the place to meet Santa Claus, listen to a festive Christmas concert and watch the annual Holiday Tree Lighting in the middle of Ocean Ave., as well as the place to visit on each night of Hanukkah for the lighting of Carmel's public menorah.

Without this tiny spot of beauty, peace, and joyful social gatherings, Carmel-by-the-Sea wouldn't be complete.

Movies on the Monterey Peninsula

For those of us who hail from big cities, the Monterey Peninsula requires some adjustment where moviegoing is concerned. You won't find a theatre every few blocks the way you will in LA or San Francisco. Apart from film festivals and other special screenings that take place in various locations, a movie-lover on the Peninsula has four theatres to choose from. Fortunately, they're all good choices.
